Photochromic ink (also called light-sensitive or sunlight-activated ink) is a specialty printing material that changes color when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, such as sunlight. When moved back indoors or away from UV source, it reverts to its original color. This reversible transformation makes it ideal for interactive packaging, security features, and novelty applications.
How it works:
The ink contains photochromic dyes (typically naphthopyrans or spiropyrans) that undergo a molecular structure change when hit by UV radiation. This alters the way they absorb and reflect light, producing a visible color shift. The reaction is instantaneous and fully reversible – the molecules snap back to their original form once UV is removed.
Key applications:
Eyewear lenses (transition lenses)
Sunlight-activated packaging and labels
Brand authentication (covert feature)
Novelty products (mugs, toys, apparel)
Outdoor signage and displays
Anti-counterfeiting on documents
Advantages:
Instant, reversible color change
No power source required
Multiple color options (colorless to colored, or color to color)
Durable and long-lasting
Can be combined with conventional inks
