Temperature Sensitive Ink
Temperature sensitive ink, also known as thermochromic ink, is a specialized printing material that changes color in response to temperature variations. This innovative technology creates interactive experiences and provides functional benefits across various industries, from smart packaging to brand protection.
How It Works
Thermochromic inks contain microencapsulated leuco dyes or liquid crystals that alter their molecular structure when exposed to specific temperature thresholds. The microcapsules (typically 3–5 microns) protect the active components during printing and handling, only activating when the temperature crosses the designed point.
There are two main types:
Reversible Thermochromic Ink: The color change is temporary; the ink returns to its original color when the temperature normalizes. Ideal for promotional items, interactive applications, and reusable indicators.
Irreversible Thermochromic Ink: The color change is permanent once the activation temperature is reached. Used for safety indicators, quality control, and tamper-evidence where a temperature event must be recorded.
The activation temperature can be precisely controlled from -15°C to 70°C, depending on the formulation. Common activation points include:
Cold activation: 0°C to 10°C (beverage cool indicators)
Body heat activation: 30°C to 38°C (touch-reactive materials)
High temperature warning: 40°C to 70°C (safety indicators)
Key Applications
Beverage labels that indicate when a drink is perfectly chilled
Food freshness and safety indicators (e.g., if a product has been thawed)
Baby bottle temperature warning labels to prevent burns
Medical thermometers and fever indicators
Promotional mugs, cups, and marketing materials that reveal messages when heated
Battery test indicators printed directly on batteries
Anti-counterfeit seals that change color when tampered with
Interactive packaging, books, and educational materials
